Uke Nomad

Uke Nomad – Anu Grace and Laurie Bycroft, Australian kiwis at heart on their third tour of the south island are re-living the rich troubadour tradition of writing/storytelling and singing up the places, rivers and people they meet.

The connections made over their previous visits and time spent living in New Zealand are both the inspiration for friendships as well as the music they shared with us. Sharing is really the most apt description of the night of music that we were gifted. The interwoven storytelling narrated the pulse at the heart of the songs written by these two incredibly talented musician-singer-songwriters. The intimacy created upheld the specialness of each creation further enhanced by their obvious enjoyment of their craft.

Anu and Laurie with instrumentation from the uke, flute and vocal lines, brought tenor and bass ukuleles into a new light awash with beautiful harmonies, were joined by the rhythmic pulsation of Tracey on cajon, a connection drawn from a meeting in Kaikoura, a illustration of the warmth these performers generate around them.

The audience did not want the night to end, and it is always evident when the audience want to speak with the performers following the show that real and tangible bonds have been woven through music.

Original music rang out and won the hearts of those present, it was a night to remember that will live in our hearts for many long nights to come. With the promise of return in two years time we have something to look forward to.
