Christchurch Folk Music Club

Online Mini Concert -17/05/2020

This night offered another opportunity to reconnect with friends, family and fellow folkies.

We were treated to three heartwarming acts that brought light to our autumnal night.

Locals Rosie Laing and Martin Kraakman, shared both poetry and musical tributes. Rosie’s penned prose drew pictures with words, the current situation outlined love over the lockdown, and
Martin shared a self penned instrumental, he undersold what was truly a polished piece.
Finishing the well rounded set with a visit to Dominion Road, remembering that we are in May, New Zealand Music month.

Ronel Hunter joined us from the Caitlins, seeking refuge in her garage for the quieter option that this space offered away form her young family’s night routines.
Ronel opened with a coffee song, her sometimes treat to assist her through the lockdown days.
Heartfelt song choices were one of the features of Ronel’s set and her explanations about the choices drew the audience in. A well thought out song selection, offering the nostalgia of Tracy Chapman tribute, one of Ronel’s influence-rs, sung with emotion and honesty.

The night concluded with Andrew Lockwood, hailing from England, coming to us from Victoria, Australia. This new virtual platform offers borderless performances.

Andrew’s songwriting drew on his life experiences, his visit to Aotearoa, the Puffing Billy train of the Dandenongs, Christchurch following the mosque attack. Andrew paints a picture and also weaves in humanity and option for personal reflection of the deeper meaning of life and creating.

A night where friendships came to the fore, brought together through the passion and creativity of music.
